17th International Film Festival - Kerala

The 17th International Film Festival of Kerala will be formally inaugurated today at the Nishagandhi open air auditorium at 6pm. The festival will be inaugurated by chief minister Oommen Chandy.

Actor Mohanlal will be the guest of honour at the function to be attended by Australian filmmaker and festival jury chairman Paul Cox, Union minister of state for human resources development Shashi Tharoor, minister for cinema K B Ganesh Kumar, minister for health and devaswom V S Sivakumar, mayor K Chandrikaand Kerala State Chalachithra Academy chairman S Priyadarshan, among other dignitaries.

The inaugural film will be Alfred Hitchcock's restored silent film 'The Ring', which will be screened with a live orchestra by a British group. The venue has been designed in such a way that viewers will enjoy the ambience of the Roosevelt Theatre in Los Angeles where the film was screened for the first time in 1927."We have tried to recreate the exterior of the Roosevelt Theatre at the entrance of the Nishagandhi theatre. The film will be screened in the background of the podium," said T K Rajeev Kumar, who has done the art direction of the venue. More than 40 people have been working round-the-clock on the venue.

Panel discussions being held as part of the festival would include a round table conference on children's film, discussion on contemporary Sri Lankan cinema, a meet of cinematographers, meet on social media and film marketing and a round table on Indian film festivals.

The screening of films will begin from 9.30am and 11 films will be screened on Friday. All the films that are scheduled to be screened on Friday are from the world cinema section.
